BROKEN TOGETHER

Let’s Bring Honor Back

Mother’s Day

Pastor Jerry Jackson

05.10.15

We have real authority issues in our world today, and the solution starts by learning how to honor one another. Pastor Jerry shares this inspirational Mother's day message to encourage us to obey one of God's commandments, "Honor your Father and Mother". This commandment comes with a promise. As Christ Followers, we must get under what God has put over us, and get over what God has put under us. In addition, we must learn how to honor our Parents through each stage of life - as a child, as a young adult, and as an adult. Discover how you can truly make a loving difference in your parents' life.

Let’s Bring Honor Back

Mother’s Day Pastor

OUTLINE

WE HAVE REAL AUTHORITY ISSUES TODAY AND THE SOLUTION STARTS BY LEARNING HOW TO HONOR ONE ANOTHER

WE MUST BRING HONOR BACK TO OUR HOMES AND TO THE HOUSE OF GOD - CHURCH

Ephesians 6:2-3 (NLT)

“Honor your father and mother. This is the first of the Ten Commandments that ends with a promise. And this is the promise: IF you honor your father and mother, you will live a long life, full of blessing.”

WHY DID GOD GIVE THIS COMMAND?

1. Every parent is FLAWED.

2. I WOULDN’T BE ALIVE without them.

3. God chose their DNA TO MAKE ME UNIQUE.

Psalm 139:13, 16 (NLT)

“God knit me together in my mother’s womb. . . and recorded every day of my life before I was born.”

I. HONORING MOTHERS TODAY

Birth Moms … Adopted Moms ... Foster Moms ... Step Moms … Grandma Moms

II. HOW DO I HONOR MY PARENTS AT EACH STAGE?

1. AS A CHILD, I HONOR MY MOTHER & FATHER

BY OBEYING THEM

Ephesians 6:1 (LB)

“Children, obey your parents; this is the right thing to do because God has placed them in authority over you.”

2. AS A YOUNG ADULT I HONOR MY PARENTS

BY RESPECTING THEM

Leviticus 19:3

“Each of you must respect his mother and father.”

Hebrews 12:9 (Mes)

“We respect our own parents for training and not spooling us . . .”

BY LISTENING TO THEM

Proverbs 13:1 (Mes)

“Intelligent children listen to their parents; foolish children do their own thing.”

Proverbs 23:22 (LB)

“Listen to your father’s advice and don’t despise your mother’s experience.”

Proverbs 6:20-23 (TEV)

“Do what your father tells you, and never forget what your mother teaches you. Keep their words with you always, locked in your heart. Their instructions will lead you. . . protect you. . . and advise you. . . Their instructions are like a lamp; their corrections can teach you how to live.”

3. AS AN ADULT, I HONOR MY PARENTS

BY APPRECIATING THEM

Proverbs 23:22b (TEV)

“When your mother is old, show her your appreciation.”

Proverbs 23:25 (NLT)

“\Give your parents joy! May she who gave you birth be happy.”

BY PROVIDING FOR THEM

1 Timothy 5:2-4 (NLT)

“[In your church] treat the older women as you would your own mother, and treat the younger women as your own sisters. The church should care for any widow who has no one else to care for her. BUT if she has children or grandchildren, their first responsibility is to show godliness at home and repay their parents by taking care of them. This is something that pleases God.”

1 Timothy 5:8 (GW)

“If anyone doesn’t take care of his own family, especially his immediate family, he has denied the Christian faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
