Dealing with My Feelings

Pastor Jerry Jackson

02.22.15

OUTLINE

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (RSV)

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NLV)

Do you not know that your body is a house of God where the Holy Spirit lives? God gave you His Holy Spirit. Now you belong to God. You do not belong to yourselves. God bought you with a great price. So honor God with your body. You belong to Him.

Romans 12:2

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

GOD WANTS ME TO BE EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY

Mark 12:29-30 (NLT)

“The most important commandment is this: You must love the Lord your God with ALL YOUR HEART, and all your SOUL, and all your MIND, and all your STRENGTH.”

UNDERSTANDING MY EMOTIONS

• GOD HAS EMOTIONS

• MY ABILITY TO FEEL IS A GIFT FROM GOD

Genesis 1:26 (NIV)

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness...’”

• TWO EXTREMES TO AVOID:

Emotionalism: MEANS - ALL THAT MATTERS IS HOW I FEEL

Stoicism: FEELINGS AREN’T IMPORTANT AT ALL.

• God gave us THE BOOK OF PSALMS to understand our emotions.

WHY I MUST LEARN TO MANAGE MY EMOTIONS

Four important reasons why you need to learn to deal with how you feel.

1. BECAUSE MY FEELINGS ARE OFTEN UNRELIABLE

Proverbs 14:12 (NIV)

“There is a way that SEEMS right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death.”

2. BECAUSE I DON’T WANT TO BE MANIPULATED

Proverbs 25:28 (NAB)

“Like an open city with no defenses is the man with no check on his feelings.”

1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)

“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

3. BECAUSE I WANT TO PLEASE GOD

Romans 8:6-8 (TEV)

“To be controlled by human nature results in death; to be controlled by the Spirit results in life and peace. . . Those who obey their human nature cannot please God.”

4. BECAUSE I WANT TO SUCCEED IN LIFE

Proverbs 5:23 (CEV)

“[People] get lost and die because of their foolishness and lack of self-control.”

1 Peter 4:2 (TEV)

“From now on you must live the rest of your earthly lives controlled by God’s will and not by human desires.”

HOW TO MANAGE AN UNWANTED FEELING

1. NAME IT!

Ask: WHAT AM I REALLY FEELING?

WHAT ARE MY TRIGGERS?

2. CHALLENGE IT!

Psalm 26:2

“Lord, cross examine me. Test my motives and my affections.”

Ask: 1. WHAT’S THE REAL REASON I’M FEELING THIS?

2. IS IT TRUE?

3. IT IS HELPING OR HURTING ME?

Job 15:12 (NIV)

Eliphaz asked Job: “Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash?”

3. TAME IT!

Philippians 2:5

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.”

•EVERYDAY ASK GOD TO: FILL ME WITH HIS SPIRIT

Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

“When the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

• EVERYDAY ASK GOD TO: HELP ME MANAGE MY MOUTH

Proverbs 13:3 (LB)

“Self-control means controlling the tongue!”

MAKE GOD’S WORD MY WORD

Psalm 119:11 (NIV)

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."

Psalm 19:14 (NIV)

“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord!”
