SORROW IN THE UPPER ROOM

March 15, 2015- 10:30 am

A WALK TO THE CROSS WITH CHRIST

We start the walk with Christ to the Cross in the Upper Room. Fourteen hours later, Jesus will be tortured, beaten, betrayed, crucified on a cross, and suffer a horrific death for all of mankind.

Have you ever wondered why Jesus died on the cross? Did you ever wonder why Judas betrayed Him?

In this message, Pastor Jerry shares Jesus' motivation for dying on the cross and Judas' motivation for betraying Jesus. We learn 3 important lessons from the Last Supper.

A WALK TO THE CROSS WITH CHRIST

Sorrow in the Upper Room

Pastor Jerry Jackson

03.15.15

OUTLINE

JESUS CAME TO DIE

Matthew 20:28

“Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

THE LAST SUPPER AND THE BEGINNING OF CHRIST’S SUFFERING

Matthew 26:21-25; Mark 14:18-21; Luke 22:21-22; John 13:21-22

After Jesus had said these things and while they were still reclining at the table and eating, He became deeply troubled and said, “I’m telling you the truth. One of you will betray me, even someone who is eating with me!” The disciples became extremely distressed and looked around at each other, wondering who He meant. They began to ask each other which one of them might do this. One by one they asked Him, “Lord, am I the one?” He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping his hand in the dish with me. Look, the hand of the one who is betraying me is with me on the table. The Son of Man will indeed go as it has been predicted in the Scriptures. But how awful it will be for the one who betrays him! It would have been better for that man if he had never been born.” Then Judas asked him, “Rabbi, am I the one?” “You have said it yourself,” Jesus replied.

JESUS WAS DEEPLY TROUBLED BECAUSE HE KNEW ONE OF HIS DISCIPLES WAS GOING TO BETRAY HIM

JESUS RESPONSE TO HIS BETRAYER: HE LOVED HIM AND OFFERED HIM FORGIVENESS

JUDAS ISCARIOT: GOOD ACTOR, BAD MOTIVES

John 6:26-27,35-38,41-42,53-56,60, 66-71 26

Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw the miraculous signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?” 53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” 66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. 67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)

JUDAS BECAME BITTER AND BEGAN TO TURN AGAINST JESUS

John 12:1-9

Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” 9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

JUDAS WAS DESPERATE AND WAS WILLING TO SELL OUT JESUS AT ANY PRICE

Matthew 26:14-16 14

Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?” And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him. 16 From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus.

CHRIST’S FINAL APPEAL TO JUDAS

John 13:23-30 23

One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.” 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

WHAT DOES JUDAS AND THE LAST SUPPER TEACH US?

1. NO ONE CAN MANIPULATE JESUS

Matthew 16:24 24

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.

2. NO ONE CAN FOOL JESUS

Psalms 139:1-12

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

3. A LOVING GOD NEVER GIVES UP ON US

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
